Before start of show, Fan Mail: Brandon Pshaw

Hey guy I just wanted to tell you a little story. I work night shift and work every other WED 7pm to 7am. I wanted to point out my dedication to this show and how much I enjoy it. One night It was -18 degrees out side with the wind chill, and my work does not offer WiFi. So I wanted to hear the show, so bad I went outside to search for a open WiFi connection from my Ipod touch. In the freezing cold, I found one about a block from my work and stole internet to get TPG podcast via Itunes. Thanks to you Steven, Jeremy and Kristin with your busy lives, still having time for us the listeners.

P.s I continue to Steal internet at work to download this awesome show. Keep up the great work.

in the story above… this week a 3 yr old mistook a real handgun left laying on a table for Wii remote, dying after accidentally shooting herself.
The news is full of stories like this… cops shooting kids in alleys because they saw a handgun that didn’t have the orange tip… etc..
I believe toys need to look like toys.. bright crazy colors… not that close to real weapons.
I in no way blame the video games, or the toys… I think in the story above the parents should be put in jail for leaving a gun lying on a table. loaded. in front of children.
that being said… Look at the similarity in the toy and the real weapon:

WTF!!!
Title: Teabagging / humiliation moves impossible
Type: Bug
Opened: 3/4/2010 8:53:13 AM

“The respawn camera flies back to the spawn location immediately after dying, so your opponents can’t teabag / shoot / melee your body and have a possibility of you seeing it.”

Shishka’s Note:

There’s a bug in the Alpha regarding how brief the “death cam” focuses on the player’s body that is being resolved for Beta/Delta. As with previous Halos, players should have a couple seconds to look around and locate where they were shot from. The fringe benefit of this is that the enemy that killed you (or the nearest passerby) can ravish your helpless corpse as you bear witness from beyond the veil

Came out on blog stating that the whole impetus for yahoo deal was Google.

“we are concerned about Google business practices that tend to lock in publishers and advertisers and make it harder for Microsoft to gain search volume.”

“Microsoft would obviously be among the first to say that leading firms should not be punished for their success,” Heiner wrote,”Our concerns relate only to Google practices that tend to lock in business partners and content (like Google Books) and exclude competitors, thereby undermining competition more broadly.”

Their argument? Sheer scale makes Google anti-competitive (pot meet kettle? – now that’s what I was saying the whole time I read through this)

Lawsuit by Apple against HTC, but really aimed at Google

People with non-Slim PS3’s were reporting that they couldn’t play online, and select offline, games

Error: 8001050F would not allow them to connect to PSN

The temporary fix? don’t turn on your console (how on Earth would this qualify as either a fix or a workaround?? Epic Fail- JP)

Mysterious patch d/led off STEAM with patch note: “changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations.”

26 radios around the levels that give off different clues from morse code to formulas

Consensus seems to point towards the antagonist GlaDos having transmitted herself outside of the Aperture science facility, which means a possible sequel

The Conservatives are up in arms that the massive amounts of free online content make it harder for smaller retailers to compete

BBC is citing cost-cutting measures and ways to “focus” licensing fees

“The point of the reductions is not to diminish the service we offer to the public, but rather to focus the license fee and the creative energy of the BBC on delivering the highest quality and the maximum public value.”

Real impetus involves an upcoming election, and the newspapers and magazines grousing about investment in that new fangled “Intarweb”

(SM) Should a company change its business model just so that others don’t have to change theirs?

some are predicting this to backfire as it might not be enough to placate those up in arms.

Steam is coming to Mac. Not just Steam, though. Judging by these awesome teasers released by Valve, so are Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress 2 AND Left 4 Dead

Whats Facebook’s secret? (Kristin and then JP)

(iKDR) with features like virtual farming and finding my pimp name, FB is an obvious win LOL

FB transends generations – promotes community building thru groups and fan pages, allow people of all ages to stay in touch with friends and family and reconnect with classmates and collegues, provides fun and addictive gaming platforms, real time news sources, etc.

(JP) I think this is not just generation related but user type related, power user, gossip, gamer… there is enough here and it doesn’t lock you into a certain way to use it… keep up w/ friends, play games with them, etc… it’s up to you

I actually know some friends with more than one account for different types of interactions ( a family account, a friend account, and a professional account – although they admit that one is going dead as most of it is being done on Linkd in now)

I think it’s great they have been able to monetize it like this too… if only Twitter could get it in gear and monetize it without hurting the users…

RCR Wireless is a news source for the wireless communications industry and publishes regular rants regarding the industry

Mr. Douche-bag (aka Dan Meyer) recently attended the Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Spain and came to a discovery:

“All of the awesome inventions in the history of the world were created by people that were so intent on inventing awesome things that they never worried about going outside, or meeting a mate or even showering”

He goes on to state that “nerds [should stay] in their place under the jocks in the traditional hierarchy”

and “while still residing in their parent’s basements planning their next panty raid, [nerds] are being feted by their one-time torturers as saviors of the wireless industry and set to move into the big house on campus

I hereby virtual bitch-slap you, Mr.Dan “Douche-bag” Meyer. You have NO business being in the tech industry. My wish for you is to be the parent of a super genius nerd, who refuses to leave your babsement, or share any of his earnigs with you. </end of rant>

(SM) for the record, he went back and edited the post and softened it a little bit, but the sentiment is still there. Nerds, stay in your basement and don’t have a life.

Apple has set a new standard by removing and banning content for Sexy content

Problem – it is selectively applied.

New Guidelines:

No images of women in bikinis

No images of men in bikinis <-well thats goes without saying (iKDR) {you do know Steven right? hahahaha}

No skin

No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs

No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex – all banned

Nothing that can be sexually arousing

No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content

So… Why are the Playboy app and SI swimsuit app still available?

Phil Schiller claims they are a well known brand in an acceptable established format

An Italian judge held three Google executives criminally responsible for an online video of an autistic teenager being bullied

Internet giant may be forced to police their content in Italy, and even beyond.

video had been viewed 5,500 times over the 2 months it was online, when it climbed to the top of Google Italy’s “most entertaining” video list and had more than 80 comments, including users urging its removal.

Google argued that it was unaware of the offensive material and acted swiftly to remove it after being notified by authorities, taking the video down within two hours.

Google called the decision “astonishing,” saying it “attacks the very principles of freedom on which the Internet is built.”

“If company employees like me can be held criminally liable for any video on a hosting platform when they had absolutely nothing to do with the video in question, then our liability is unlimited,” he said in a statement.

Geek Speak

*Terminator Franchise rights acquired…. What will the future hold? (JP)
Mike Fleming at Deadline Hollywood has an intriguing answer: He’s read a 24-page treatment for fifth and sixth movies that would wrap up the story by none other than William Wisher, the screenwriter who contributed to the first two (and best-loved) installments in the franchise, James Cameron’s original Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
How great would that be?? But will it come to light?

(SM) My question is do we wanna see Linda Hamilton all “Ellen Ripley” again…

Per gizmodo – why this is sooo different compared to iPhone (iKDR):

bright, superflat squares fill the screen

live, real-time data seamlessly integrated

Live tiles on the Start screen, which you can customize, are updated dynamically with fresh content, like weather, or if you’ve pinned a person to your Start screen, their latest status updates and photos.

The meat of the phone is organized around a set of hubs: People, Pictures, Games, Music + Video, Marketplace, and Office. They’re kind of like uber-applications

People hub might be the best social networking implementation yet on a phone: It’s a single place to see all of your friends’ status updates from multiple services in a single stream … Facebook and Windows Live. (No Twitter support announced yet)

Music + Video Hub is essentially the entirety of Zune HD’s software, tucked inside of Windows Phone 7

A piece of interface that’s shockingly not there: A desktop syncing app

Microsoft’s vision of Zune is finally clear with Windows Phone 7 with app (like the iTunes/iPhone)

Xbox Live on a phone – It’s tied to your Live profile, achievements & gamer points for the games you play on your phone, which will be tied to games back on your Xbox 360. (I do have this on my iPhone right now as well)

browser is Internet Exploder, email is Outlook

Bing and Bing Maps are built into the phone as the default search and maps

(SM) The Hub concept is totally extensible +++ it can still be data centric and launch tradition apps

1GHz Snapdragon proc is impressive as this is running a lot of the iPad wannabe tablets from CES… lots of power under the hood…

Looks a little (to me…) like an iPhone and a Droid had an illegitimate kid… and he’s going to prove that he’s the best to both families that don’t want him! hahahaha

Darpa wants RATS to pull speech out of “noisy or degraded signals,” with 99 percent accuracy at distinguishing spoken words from background noise.

Astronauts on the International Space Station finally have a live Internet connection and made their first direct Twitter post Friday to prove it.

Space Internet uses the station’s high-speed Ku-band antenna, so it is active whenever the station has that connection.

To surf the Web, astronauts can use a station laptop to control a desktop computer on Earth. It is that ground computer that has the physical connection to the Internet.

to the tune of 4.2 billion dollars

Apple first opened the App Store in July 2008,

Sales were brisk, with 300 million apps sold by December. After the holidays, that number had jumped to 500 million.

Earlier this month, Apple announced that sales had topped 3 billion;

that means iPhone users downloaded 2.5 billion apps in 2009 alone. (its possible i’m responsible for at least a gazillion of those downloads kdr)

Gartner’s figures show another 16 million apps that could come from other platform’s recently opened app stores, giving Apple at least 99.4 percent of all mobile apps sold for the year.

Also Quick note about the U1 Hybrid we discussed last week which I feel stole the show at CES… (JP)

When you detach the tablet part… the base running windows 7… continues to function as a pc

so if you have it attached to a monitor… you’re actually getting 2 for the price of one!

Take Syabas’ Popcorn Hour C-200, the much-loved streamer of choice for AV nerds.

Now make it smaller, add Netflix support and a far superior interface,

cut the price from $300 to $130. That’s the Popbox.

Not the Hackable beast that is the Popcorn Hour… that stays in the lineup

This is for normal average everyday joe’s at home!

Simple, and cheap! very nice….

(SM) Explain TV watching habits

Channel surfing, very little dedicated watching, feels Niche and are people willing to pay premium?

(kdr) 3D on PS3 – possible okay for watching tv, but will I get migraines from gaming?

Are there 2 many moving parts and is it too proprietary? How many years before we see this catching on?
